Real Estate Investment Firm
A real estate finance house was mulling a substantial loan to a developer who had tentative ties to a corrupt businessman.
The lender commissioned Synesis Insight to conduct due diligence on the residential developer to ascertain his local & regional reputation - and understand how strong his links were to this known fraudster.
After extensive enquiries speaking to sources in the property industry, and journalists and politicians in the local area, we found that there were no substantial connections between the developer and the businessman, and therefore no major financial and reputational risk for our client. We briefed our client and they proceeded with the transaction.
African Renewable Energy Project
Our client was looking to provide a loan to a renewable energy project in Africa, but the developer of the scheme was keen to engage a consultant who’d been subject to allegations of criminal wrongdoing in the UK press.
Synesis Insight was able to confirm the veracity of the claims by speaking to well placed human sources close to the government and in business circles.
We then briefed our client on the potential reputational and compliance risks of having exposure to this project. Our risk assessment enabled the client to make an informed decision about this transaction.
C-Suite Referencing
Synesis Insight was mandated on a major acquisition in the financial services industry - our client was looking to hire a C-Suite executive to head up the newly acquired entity.
We conducted confidential interviews with former colleagues of this individual, including CEOs and board members of large listed companies.
We found this senior executive had an adverse professional reputation in the industry despite having held some senior positions in their career. Our enquiries were able to draw a consistent picture that helped the client form the view that this individual would not be a good fit for the role. The executive was not hired.
UK Supermarket Supply Chain
Our client was a UK supermarket which suspected one of its meat suppliers was engaged in fraudulent activity.
Synesis Insight conducted interviews with regional sources in the UK in the meat industry who were knowledgeable about this person’s business affairs. Synesis Insight also tracked down and spoke to creditors of this supplier who were owed hundreds of thousands of pounds.
Through our rigorous investigation, we uncovered credible allegations that this person might present compliance and ethical risks to our client. The supermarket terminated its relationship with this supplier.
